Eku Energy Breaks Ground on ACT’s Largest Battery Project

Positive Good celebrated a new milestone together with Eku Energy as they marked the start of construction of the Williamsdale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This is the largest BESS that is currently in construction in ACT and Eku’s third project in Australia.

The ground breaking event brought together leaders from government, industry and the media to mark the start of construction on the 250 MW / 500 MWh facility, which will be capable of powering one-third of Canberra for up to two hours during peak demand.

The Williamsdale BESS is a cornerstone of the ACT Government’s Big Canberra Battery initiative, designed to boost grid reliability, strengthen energy security and provide affordable clean power to households and businesses.

At the ceremony, Eku Energy announced the launch of a $500,000 Community Grants Program, aimed at supporting local non-profits and initiatives in employment, education, environment, and social inclusion. A further $500,000 investment will go towards advancing battery storage and integration research through the Australian National University.

We’re proud of how these commitments reflect on Eku Energy’s philosophy as a developer: that major infrastructure projects must deliver shared value and leave a positive legacy for the communities.

With shovels in the ground, the Williamsdale BESS moves from vision to reality marking a tangible milestone of the momentum in Australia’s clean energy transformation.
